Volkswagen Is Planning to Launch 20 New Plug-in Hybrids and Electric Vehicles in China

Volkswagen is planning to launch 20 new plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles in China over the next five years.

The company previously planned to introduce 15 cars from its core Volkswagen unit along with other brands under the company by 2018, with most of the cars to be produced in China.

Volkswagen is integrating electronic vehicle production into the company's Wolfsburg and Leipzig plants.

Volkswagen Group CEO Martin Winterkorn said in 2013 that the company was capable of producing 40 pure electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles if there is a rise in demand for the vehicles in the market.

Volkswagen is already competing with other electric vehicle makers like BMW, Nissan, and Tesla Motors.

Reuters reported Volkswagen China Group head of Jochem Heizmann as saying: "In the near future, Volkswagen will be offering Chinese drivers over 20 NEVs, from small cars to large-sized SUVs, from plug-in hybrids to pure electric cars."

China is trying to promote electric vehicles due to the increase in vehicle pollution within the country, and Beijing is targeting to have more than 5 million green vehicles on the Chinese roads by 2020.
